Ben Folds is a badass. And a musical genius. And a good drummer. How can you not dig the guy?
Friday night at the Chaifetz he was in classic form, performing solo versions of his biggest hits as well as some newer tunes. And while the overly chatty youths on the venue floor sometimes made it difficult for us geezers in the comfy seats to hear Ben during his more sedate songs, we all enthusiastically sang along to “Army”, “Rockin The Suburbs”, “Brick”, “One Angry Dwarf” and other faves.
At the end of “Steven’s Last Night In Town”, Ben segued into a drum solo by banging on a floor tom held by a stage hand as he moved to stage left where a drum kit suddenly appeared. He continued to play a credible, entertaining drum solo that climaxed with him tossing the sticks at the kit as he triumphantly strode back to the piano.
Like I said, he’s a badass.
